Background
'The empire on which the sun never sets' has been used to describe the British Empire, mainly in the 19th and 20th century. At one point, the British Empire covered almost a quarter of the world's surface, not including the USA. This is the main reason why English is spoken around the world today. However, over the years the English language developed differently in different places, which is why e.g. American English is not the same as British English.
